Tax credit advice for carers

Local MP Katy Clark has voiced concerns that carers may be missing out on much-needed financial help.

The Labour MP flagged-up the issue of Working Tax Credits, where some parents with caring responsibilities could be losing out because they are unaware of exemptions to the ruling that people must work at least 24 hours per week to qualify for the benefit.

Ms Clark said, “I am concerned that many vulnerable people will lose out as a result of the Government’s tax credit changes, but there are exemptions in place for carers.

“I would urge any couple with one partner working 16 hours a week and the other receiving Carers’ Allowance, and who are not currently receiving Working Tax Credit, to look into what support they may be entitled to.”

The MP added, “The charity ‘Contact a Family’ currently has a free advice line on 0808 808 3555, which parents can call.”

Alternatively, anyone living within the North Ayrshire & Arran constituency can contact Katy Clark’s office on 01505 684127.
