Women and children hit hardest by welfare cuts

Local MSP Margaret Burgess says women and children are bearing the brunt of welfare cuts imposed by the Tory-Lib Dem UK Government.

Mrs Burgess spoke-out after a Scottish Government report, published last week, showed women and families are losing-out most as a result of changes to the benefits system.  The SNP MSP said, “The slashing of Child Benefit and reducing the proportion of childcare costs covered by Working Tax Credit are disproportionately affecting women and children.  There is also the overall benefit cap, where 60 percent of those affected by the change are single female households.”

The MSP for Cunninghame South, which includes Stevenston, said the report is “extremely troubling,” adding, “The UK Government’s benefits cuts are now clearly seen to affect women more, particularly mothers and their children.

“Those who need support most in my constituency are being made to pay the price for Westminster’s economic incompetence, but it doesn’t have to be this way and it shouldn’t be this way.”

Mrs Burgess said, “Scotland has already made its opposition to these welfare cuts absolutely clear, and a majority of Scots believe the Scottish Government would be best at deciding welfare policy for Scotland.

“An SNP Government in an independent Scotland would abolish these discriminatory cuts and ensure that women and families get the support they need.”
