One of North Ayrshire’s most-respected councillors has died.
Alex McLean of the SNP passed-away last Friday (August 1) following a long battle with cancer. Despite his illness, Cllr McLean continued to represent his constituents and work on Council business until relatively recently.
Mr McLean was elected in 2012 to represent the North Coast Ward (Largs, Fairlie, Skelmorlie and the Cumbraes). Councillors across the political divide expressed sadness on hearing the news of their colleague’s death.
Cllr Willie Gibson, SNP Leader of North Ayrshire Council, said, “I worked with Alex for a relatively short time but always found him to be a committed councillor who had the interests of local people he served at heart.
“A good example of his commitment was that, despite his illness, he made the effort to attend a meeting of the Council just two weeks ago because the important local issue of education in Largs was up for discussion. He will be sadly missed by all of his Council colleagues and friends.”
Council Chief Executive Elma Murray noted, “On behalf of everyone in the Council I would wish to extend my condolences to Councillor McLean’s family at this sad time.”
Kay Ullrich, the former SNP MSP for the local area, said, “I’m very sad to hear the news. I'll be thinking of Alex and all the others who fought for Independence when I cast my YES vote in the referendum. We stand on the shoulders of giants.”
Cllr McLean’s funeral will take place at 10.45am on Monday, August 11 at the Clark Memorial Church in Largs (Holmsford Bridge Crematorium, Dreghorn at 12noon).
