Father Graeme Bell of St Mary’s Church in Ardrossan Road, Saltcoats has been arrested in relation to alleged ‘financial irregularities’ within the local parish.
A spokesperson for the Diocese of Galloway said Father Bell had been given permission to take a leave of absence and to resign his position as parish priest at St Mary’s, adding, “On Wednesday, May 27, a report was passed to Police Scotland alleging financial irregularities in the parish.
“Police enquiries are ongoing and Father Bell has vacated the parish house. The Diocese of Galloway will continue to assist the police in their investigations.”
Police Scotland confirmed a 40-year-old man was arrested in Saltcoats on Wednesday, May 27, “in connection with alleged embezzlement offences.”
